The winter time is an especially difficult time of the year to keep your wood floors clean. You can be dragging rock salt and snow on your boots into your house one day and dirt and slush into the house the next. Your hardwood floors can end up taking a beating with everything that gets left on them from your boots. If you want to keep your house as chemical-free as possible, you'll need to use natural cleaners to clean the floor. Here is how you can use natural cleaners to keep you hardwood floors clean.

Removing Rock Salt

The first thing you should do is clean up the rock salt on the floor. Rock salt can easily spread all around your floor and turn the floor's surface white if it's not cleaned up properly. The rock salt needs to be neutralized and dissolved before you can clean it up. One of the best natural cleaners to neutralize and dissolve rock salt is white vinegar. Here is how you can make a white vinegar solution to clean up rock salt.

Take a mop bucket and pour in a couple cups of white vinegar. Then fill the mop bucket up about halfway with warm water. Take a clean mop head and soak it in the white vinegar and water solution. Give the mop head a half rinse before spreading the solution on the floor. Be careful not to allow the solution to splash all over the place. Let the solution sit on the floor for a couple of minutes and then mop it up. Pour out the mop bucket and refill it again with warm water. Mop rinse the floor as you normally would with the warm water.

Wait until the floor dries before you do a regular cleaning on it. If you see any white stains on the floor after it dries, repeat the process to get rid of the rock salt residue in these areas.

Regular Cleaning

You will also want to clean the floor so it looks shiny and new. There are a couple of regular household products you can use to clean the floor.

Thoroughly rinse out the mop head to make sure you have removed all of the rock salt residue from it before you use it to clean the floor. Fill up the mop bucket about a third to a half with hot water. Take a couple of cups of olive oil and about a cup of lemon juice and mix it with hot water. Soak the mop head into solution and then rinse it until most of the cleaning solution is pressed out of it. Light mop the entire surface of the floor.

About Me
Choosing Better Flooring

After we started renovating our home, I realized that we needed to choose flooring that would be a little more kid-friendly. We had been using cream-colored carpet, but it didn't stand up well against the children at all. Within no time, the carpet was gray, dingy, and stained from foot traffic. To ward off problems in the future, we opted for a dark-colored hardwood flooring that already looked distressed. After it was installed, we were amazed with how incredible it looked. This blog is for anyone out there who has children and is thinking about buying new flooring for their home.
