The flooring in your home is a major focal point. It may be one of the first things that people notice when they come into your house, which is why it is so important that you do your best to care for your flooring properly. Carpet is one of the most popular types of flooring and should be cared for very specifically. Here are some things you need to know about taking care of carpet.

1. Don't Allow Shoes OR Bare Feet In your House

Most people already adhere to the no shoes policy in the home. This is a great policy because it protects the carpet from being damaged with dirt, hard soles, and being torn up. Another important rule to implement is to have people only wear socks in the house and avoid walking around with bare feet. The reason for this is that your feet have oils on them. When these oils are transferred to the carpet, they soak into the fibers and are incredibly hard to remove. Removing dirt from the carpet may be a nuisance, but it is easy and possible. Removing oil from the carpet is much more challenging and in some cases you can't even remove all of the oil. This is why you should have people wear socks in the house whenever possible.

2. Keep Spills Moist Until You Can Clean Them

Another important thing is to know how to clean your carpet when there are spills. Even the most careful homeowners will have spills at some point, which is why it is important that you are prepared and know what to do before the problem occurs. For example, when you spill on the carpet you should clean it up immediately. However, you may not always have the right supplies or the time to fully clean it. Until you can get to the spill, get a damp towel and lay it over the stain. You don't want the stain to dry; keeping it moist will prevent it from fully sinking in.

3. Vacuum More

Most people don't vacuum their carpets enough. If you have high traffic in your house you should be vacuuming multiple times a week. Twice a week should be considered the minimum, and then more for places that have children, pets and lots of traffic. Vacuuming improves the air quality of the home, protects the carpet and keeps your carpets looking nice.

About Me
Choosing Better Flooring

After we started renovating our home, I realized that we needed to choose flooring that would be a little more kid-friendly. We had been using cream-colored carpet, but it didn't stand up well against the children at all. Within no time, the carpet was gray, dingy, and stained from foot traffic. To ward off problems in the future, we opted for a dark-colored hardwood flooring that already looked distressed. After it was installed, we were amazed with how incredible it looked. This blog is for anyone out there who has children and is thinking about buying new flooring for their home.
